Now the reality is that the world is full of ideas claiming to be truth. So where can we find 100% reliable, authentic, God-given truth? That is the focus of our Sabbath School lesson study today. Father in heaven, once more we come before you because we need your Holy Spirit to guide our thinking and our discussion today. SPEAKER A 00:01:23 - 00:01:42 Well, folks, we have a question. I want to put a question to you, Corinne, today before we get started. Looking at the search for truth, and that's what we're talking about today, how important is it that we understand truth? In fact, if you want to answer this, Harold, you can. SPEAKER B 00:01:42 - 00:02:05 Sure. Jesus made it very clear. You know, John chapter 8 and verse 32, He said, and you shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free. Now, by implication then, if truth sets you free, error must lock you up and spoil your life. SPEAKER A 00:02:05 - 00:02:05 That's right. SPEAKER B 00:02:05 - 00:02:21 You know, Jesus went on to say in verse 36, therefore, if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. Jesus is the source of truth And that makes us free beings. SPEAKER A 00:02:21 - 00:02:22 Okay. SPEAKER B 00:02:22 - 00:02:23 Hallelujah. SPEAKER A 00:02:23 - 00:02:31 Now that's really, that is really good news that Jesus is the source of truth. Now the opposite of truth is a lie, Corinne. SPEAKER C 00:02:31 - 00:02:32 Yes. SPEAKER A 00:02:32 - 00:02:33 Isn't it? SPEAKER C 00:02:33 - 00:02:33 It is. SPEAKER A 00:02:33 - 00:02:40 And so the question I need to address today, do lies always matter? What about a small lie? You know, just a little bit of error. SPEAKER C 00:02:40 - 00:03:01 Oh, a lie is a lie, whether it's little or it's huge. So a lie does matter. And to believe a lie and act on it, I mean, for example, if I have this beautiful pretty rock here and I pray to it, no, that rock is a lie to me thinking my prayers will be answered. SPEAKER A 00:03:01 - 00:03:02 That's true. SPEAKER C 00:03:02 - 00:03:05 It's futile going to a rock like that. SPEAKER A 00:03:05 - 00:03:05 Okay. SPEAKER B 00:03:05 - 00:03:06 Yes. SPEAKER A 00:03:06 - 00:03:27 It is. So the origin of where you get truth is very important, isn't it? The Apostle Paul, now he knew what it was like to face people who were peddling lies and teaching people the wrong thing. So, I want to talk about that. The Corinthian church in particular, Harold, had a problem with false teachers. SPEAKER B 00:03:27 - 00:03:28 Sure. SPEAKER A 00:03:28 - 00:03:31 And tell us what was happening there. SPEAKER B 00:03:31 - 00:04:02 Well, they had their false teachers right in the middle of the church and they were attacking Paul. They were spreading false truths about him. Lies, if you like. They were undermining his teachings. Let me read read what he said in 2 Corinthians 10:10. For his letters, they say, are weighty and powerful, but his bodily presence is weak and his speech contemptible. They were really putting him down. SPEAKER A 00:04:02 - 00:04:05 They were giving him a hard time. Oh, yeah. SPEAKER B 00:04:05 - 00:04:06 Sure were. SPEAKER A 00:04:06 - 00:04:25 They really were. Okay. Harold, Corinne rather, let's go to you with this next question. How should we deal with false teachers in the church? You know, should we just ignore them in the hope that it would go, their problems would go away? What should we do? SPEAKER C 00:04:25 - 00:05:08 Well, I'm going to see what Paul says about this because he does make so many little bits of clarity. And if we stay there in 2 Corinthians chapter 10 and we look at verses 1 and 2 about false teachers, he says, now I, Paul myself, began gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you. But I beseech you that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence wherewith I think to be bold against some which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. SPEAKER A 00:05:08 - 00:05:09 Hmm. SPEAKER C 00:05:09 - 00:05:19 So he's talking about these false teachers and they must be met with gentleness, but with boldness and some confidence too that only God can give us. SPEAKER A 00:05:19 - 00:05:22 You need wisdom to deal with that, don't you? SPEAKER B 00:05:22 - 00:05:22 Yes. SPEAKER A 00:05:22 - 00:05:26 So Harold, how did Jesus deal with false teachers? That's an important one. SPEAKER B 00:05:26 - 00:06:07 It is an important one. You know, Jesus Himself, He was a gentle person. He was humble. But when He met problems, He could be bold and forthright. I want to read to you what Matthew says in verse, chapter 23 and verse 23, He says, Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cumin and have neglected the weightier matters of the law, justice and mercy. These you ought to have done without leaving the others undone. He really gave it to them. SPEAKER A 00:06:07 - 00:06:09 He was very forthright there, Harold, wasn't He? SPEAKER C 00:06:09 - 00:06:09 Yes. SPEAKER A 00:06:10 - 00:06:18 He really was. Look, I'm going to go back, you know, I'm still into 2 Corinthians chapter 10. Corinne, you've read verses 1 to 3. I'm going to go to 4 and 5. SPEAKER C 00:06:18 - 00:06:19 Okay. SPEAKER A 00:06:19 - 00:06:43 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds. This is a very important scripture. Going on into verse 5, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. Bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. Can you summarize for us what he's saying here? SPEAKER C 00:06:43 - 00:07:06 I think he is describing the absolute power behind his own ministry, what God has given to him. Mighty in God, he says, casting down those arguments. And Paul is appealing to the spiritual power that is evident in his teachings, that lies can never match that. SPEAKER A 00:07:06 - 00:07:26 Yes, I think that's right. So very true. Actually, these 2 verses here are very powerful for us in our personal life. Just addressing, for example, the last few lines of verse 5, bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. So now, is there a message here for us as well as for the Corinthians? SPEAKER B 00:07:26 - 00:07:59 Sure there is. This is a very insightful message. It's the essence of spiritual warfare. Paul is appealing to false teachers to bring all their ideas into obedience to Jesus Christ. It's a spiritual tool that we can use to control wrong and unwelcome thoughts. And it says we can ask Jesus to bring our thoughts into captivity to Him. Be with Jesus. That's the answer. SPEAKER A 00:07:59 - 00:08:09 That's a spiritual secret, actually. We can all take on board that, folks, and keep it in our hearts. When those unwelcome thoughts come into your mind, Give them to Jesus, ask Him to bring them to obedience to Himself. SPEAKER B 00:08:09 - 00:08:10 Yeah. SPEAKER A 00:08:10 - 00:08:34 Now I'm really encouraged by that. Thank you very much. Still in 1 Corinthians, sorry, 2 Corinthians chapter 10. I'm going to read verse 12 here. For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they measuring themselves by themselves, comparing themselves among themselves are not wise. What's he saying here? What would you say? SPEAKER C 00:08:34 - 00:08:39 Oh, the false teachers are actually competing against each other here. SPEAKER A 00:08:39 - 00:08:39 Yes. SPEAKER C 00:08:39 - 00:09:12 Going against each other, trying to outdo all the others with wisdom and with their eloquence. That's what they're trying to do. And they're particularly trying to put Paul down because he was meek and he was gentle. And this is written right there in 2 Corinthians 10:10. For his letters say they are weighty and powerful, but his bodily presence is weak and his speech is contemptible. SPEAKER A 00:09:12 - 00:09:32 You know, I've always thought of Paul as being powerful and strong, 'cause I mean, he spread the Christian message throughout the known world, didn't he? But apparently not so. But he had spiritual power, and I think therein lies the difference. Howard, how did Paul deal with this, these challenges to his person? SPEAKER B 00:09:32 - 00:10:18 Well, he does what bothers some people. He starts talking about his own achievements. I want to read a couple of verses from this chapter, chapter 10, and I'm reading verse 13 and 15. We, however, will not boast beyond measure, but within the limits of the sphere which God appointed us. a sphere which especially includes you, not boasting of things beyond measure, that is, in other men's labors, but having hope that as your faith is increased, we shall be enlarged by you in our sphere. So he really uses his own experience and says, look at that. SPEAKER A 00:10:18 - 00:10:23 He does. Yes. Were you going to add something there, Corinne? SPEAKER C 00:10:23 - 00:10:35 Oh yes, I'd like to add a little bit because I'm gonna go to verse 17, the next one. But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. SPEAKER A 00:10:35 - 00:10:35 That's a good point. SPEAKER C 00:10:35 - 00:10:41 We have to, yes, we have to bring the honor and the glory to God, not me. SPEAKER B 00:10:41 - 00:10:41 That's right. SPEAKER C 00:10:41 - 00:10:47 Not ourselves. And that's where Paul is quoting. Do you know where he quoted from? SPEAKER A 00:10:47 - 00:10:48 God. SPEAKER C 00:10:48 - 00:11:17 Jeremiah chapter 9, verse 24. And it says there, but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth Me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, says the Lord. Yes. Great delight. SPEAKER A 00:11:17 - 00:11:24 Yes. Well, that's beautiful. Indeed it is. Now, Paul finally does get down to doing some boasting there, doesn't he? SPEAKER B 00:11:24 - 00:11:25 He does. SPEAKER A 00:11:25 - 00:11:25 What does he say? SPEAKER B 00:11:25 - 00:11:41 But you wouldn't want to boast about it either. Let me read what he says. 2 Corinthians 11, and from verse 24 on, he says, from the Jews, 5 times I received 40 stripes minus 1. SPEAKER A 00:11:41 - 00:11:42 That would be bad. SPEAKER B 00:11:42 - 00:12:13 5 times. 3 times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. 3 times I was shipwrecked. A night and a day I've been in the deep, in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren. SPEAKER A 00:12:13 - 00:12:13 That's amazing. SPEAKER B 00:12:14 - 00:12:27 In weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. We've never had that. SPEAKER C 00:12:27 - 00:12:27 No. SPEAKER B 00:12:27 - 00:12:47 He was talking about his sufferings for Jesus. And the gospel truth is what drove him. It demonstrates how sincere he was. He's not talking about himself. His opponents say, you're weak, but his experience says he's a man of strength and character. SPEAKER A 00:12:47 - 00:13:06 Absolutely, he was. You know, I don't suppose that he left much in his will when he died. But you know something, folks, this is, in a sense, a lot of these letters are his last will and testament to us. So we're really blessed. For all his forbearance, and he's very patient, with people, you've got to admit. SPEAKER C 00:13:06 - 00:13:07 Hmm. SPEAKER A 00:13:07 - 00:13:46 He says a lot of things. What does he say about false teachers, however? In 2 Corinthians chapter 11, still in verse 13, I'm going to read there. And he talks about these false teachers. He says, such are false apostles, deceitful workers transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. That's pretty strong. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works. So what's he really saying about them here? SPEAKER C 00:13:46 - 00:14:00 Oh, he's using the— What's he saying? He's using the strongest language that he can to show just how Satan is inspiring all those false teachers. And we don't want him doing that to us today. SPEAKER A 00:14:00 - 00:14:00 No. SPEAKER C 00:14:00 - 00:14:02 We don't want his inspiration. SPEAKER A 00:14:02 - 00:14:02 We don't. SPEAKER C 00:14:03 - 00:14:03 Not at all. SPEAKER A 00:14:03 - 00:14:06 But it should make us very cautious, shouldn't it? SPEAKER C 00:14:06 - 00:14:06 Very. SPEAKER A 00:14:06 - 00:14:07 What we do today. SPEAKER C 00:14:07 - 00:14:09 Yes, absolutely. SPEAKER A 00:14:09 - 00:14:23 No, thank you for that. So at its bottom line, what was really motivating Paul? We know what he was telling us, what was motivating these false teachers. What was motivating Paul in his ministry to the churches? SPEAKER B 00:14:23 - 00:15:03 Well, let me read you what he tells us. And in chapter 11 of 2 Corinthians and verse 2, And then verse 15, he says, for I am jealous for you with godly jealousy, for I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. And then there's a bit of irony here. He says, why? Because I do not love you? God knows! He really, He really did emphasize how he loved the, This is the church with false teachers, but he loves them. SPEAKER A 00:15:03 - 00:15:16 Yeah, he does. I was reading in, still in 2 Corinthians 2:4, last line or 2 in that verse. But that you might know the love which I have so abundantly for you. He really did love the people. SPEAKER B 00:15:16 - 00:15:17 Amen. SPEAKER A 00:15:17 - 00:15:51 You know, and that's why he was sharing some gentle and some very forthright comments about these false teachers. So he made it very clear. Now, look, still in 2 Corinthians 11, Yeah. And I'm going to read there verse 3. And Corinne, we'll just come back to you on that verse. 2 Corinthians 11:3, but I fear lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. What's he saying to us here? SPEAKER C 00:15:51 - 00:16:14 Oh, the false teachers are just using a skill that Paul would never use. It's something that Paul never went to and he didn't need to use because he didn't want deception. He didn't want trickery or manipulation. Those would not work. So all the believers could see how totally transparent the love of God was. SPEAKER A 00:16:14 - 00:16:15 Yeah. SPEAKER C 00:16:15 - 00:16:16 Yes. SPEAKER A 00:16:16 - 00:16:19 That's lovely, isn't it? I really appreciate that. SPEAKER C 00:16:19 - 00:16:20 Absolutely. SPEAKER A 00:16:20 - 00:16:31 I'm glad that manipulation, deception is not a part of the Christian faith, not for one second. No, it's not. And it doesn't need to be, what's more. SPEAKER C 00:16:32 - 00:16:32 No. SPEAKER A 00:16:32 - 00:16:35 Because there's a spiritual power promised to us. Well, okay. SPEAKER B 00:16:35 - 00:16:43 You know, Jesus' famous words, He is the way, the truth, and the life. So truth is only with Jesus. SPEAKER A 00:16:43 - 00:16:52 Okay. He's the source of it. That's so good. Thanks, Harold. Harold, while we're talking to you, what about it? Will there be consequences for these false teachers, do you think? SPEAKER B 00:16:52 - 00:17:34 There sure will be. Let me read what Paul says in chapter 11, verse 15. Therefore, it is no great thing if his ministers— that's talking about these false teachers— also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness. They make out they're good, but they're not. And then this is what happens to them. Whose end will be according to their works. You know, they're judgment-bound. They're going to get what comes to them. God, they'll have to answer for God. If they're not following Jesus, they'll collect it from God in due course. SPEAKER A 00:17:34 - 00:17:45 Okay. That's good to realize that, isn't it? There are consequences for the things that we do and that we say. And that's a good thing. You know, it's appropriate. SPEAKER C 00:17:45 - 00:17:45 It is. SPEAKER A 00:17:45 - 00:17:47 All of us want justice. Amen. SPEAKER C 00:17:47 - 00:17:49 Don't we? We love justice. Yes. SPEAKER A 00:17:49 - 00:18:08 And we need to be clear on that. Now apparently Paul's detractors made a lot about the fact that he had some disability, which he doesn't tell us exactly, and there's endless debate about what it was. How did he himself feel about this disability? That's the question. SPEAKER C 00:18:08 - 00:18:43 Well, he did tell us about it, still in 2 Corinthians, and I've gone over to chapter 12, and he tells us a little bit about it in verses 8 to 10, and he says, For this thing I besought the Lord thrice that it might depart from me. And He said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee, for My strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly, therefore, I will rather glory in my infirmities that the power of Christ may rest upon me. SPEAKER A 00:18:43 - 00:18:44 Okay. SPEAKER C 00:18:44 - 00:19:03 Therefore, I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong. He pleaded 3 times. SPEAKER A 00:19:03 - 00:19:03 Yeah. SPEAKER C 00:19:03 - 00:19:18 3 times for whatever it was to be gone. And some think it was his eyes that were a problem, but whatever it was, It upset Paul enough to pray seriously 3 times. SPEAKER A 00:19:18 - 00:19:19 That's right. This was not trivial. SPEAKER C 00:19:19 - 00:19:21 For that healing. Yes. SPEAKER A 00:19:21 - 00:19:34 Yeah. It's interesting. He was an unusual man. I take pleasure in infirmities for Christ's sake. When was the last time you felt good about your infirmity? I tell you, it's a challenge and we need to take it very seriously. SPEAKER C 00:19:34 - 00:19:35 Yes. SPEAKER A 00:19:35 - 00:19:41 Look, Harold, my grace is sufficient for you there in verse 9. What do you make of that? SPEAKER B 00:19:41 - 00:20:35 Well, God's really saying, look, you've asked 3 times. Don't ask again. I'll be with you. Whatever comes, my grace is sufficient. Let me read verse 7. And it says in chapter 12 and verse 7, and lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, A messenger of Satan to buffet me lest I be exalted above measure. You know, God never lets any of us go too far with our own success. He'll bring us back. And He says, this was given to me so that I wouldn't be exalted above measure. God wants us to be humble but recognize His grace is sufficient at that time. SPEAKER A 00:20:35 - 00:20:35 Thanks, Harold. SPEAKER C 00:20:35 - 00:20:36 Thank you, Lord. SPEAKER A 00:20:36 - 00:20:39 Now, it is true, none of us can really cope well with a lot of success, can we? SPEAKER B 00:20:39 - 00:20:39 Right. SPEAKER A 00:20:39 - 00:20:54 So, God lets us bruise our nose periodically to make sure that we don't get on too on top of things. Look, now Paul was planning a 3rd trip to Corinth. That's what he's talking about here. SPEAKER C 00:20:54 - 00:20:54 Yes. SPEAKER A 00:20:54 - 00:21:25 To help sort things out there. And in chapter 12 and verse 20, I'm going to read what he says there. For I fear lest when I come, I shall not find you such as I wish, and that I shall be found by you such as you do not wish. Interesting words. Lest there be contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, backbitings, whisperings, conceits. They had some serious issues here, Corinne, didn't they? SPEAKER C 00:21:25 - 00:21:26 Yes, they did. SPEAKER A 00:21:26 - 00:21:28 This was not a happy group. SPEAKER C 00:21:28 - 00:22:15 No, no, not at all. And when you go Back into 1 Corinthians, and I'm going to look at chapter 3. He tells us a little bit more there in verse 1 and 3. And he says, And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto the carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. For ye are not carnal. For whereas there is among you envying and strife and divisions, Are you not carnal and walk as men? Well, men have their weaknesses, don't they? Humankind does. And it's still a problem and it still needs to be dealt with right there. It does need to be confronted. SPEAKER A 00:22:15 - 00:22:17 I think that's what Paul is saying to us. SPEAKER C 00:22:17 - 00:22:18 It has to be. SPEAKER A 00:22:18 - 00:22:32 Some of these things have to be confronted, but in a kind, generous spirit. And I think that's the very important thing there. Harold, should we be aware of these issues when we confront our own situation, churches we might be in? SPEAKER B 00:22:32 - 00:22:46 Sure, just like it was in the time of Paul, we'll find it now. We should be able to meet them but deal with it in meekness and kindness as Jesus did and Paul also did. SPEAKER A 00:22:46 - 00:23:24 Okay, okay, I think that's very important because we all know that if you confront people about an issue with an angry tone, people dig their heels in. I mean, it's just natural to do that. So yes, we need to go very prayerfully into dealing with issues with people that we know really well and brethren in the faith, that's for sure. All right, continuing to move on, Corinne, is there a place, however, for tough love when dealing with, you know, problems within a church environment. What do you think about that? SPEAKER C 00:23:24 - 00:23:58 Yes, and Paul made it very clear how to do this very carefully and gently, even though there was something, shall we say, to punish disobedience. But he does give us a little bit insight into it, and that's in 2 Corinthians 10:6. And if I go and look at chapter 10, verse 6, and he says, and having in a readiness To revenge all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled. Very gentle, when obedience is fulfilled. SPEAKER A 00:23:58 - 00:23:59 Okay, okay. SPEAKER C 00:23:59 - 00:23:59 Yes. SPEAKER A 00:23:59 - 00:24:10 But he's very specific, ready to punish all disobedience. In other words, he wasn't going to ignore it. No, no, he cannot. And he didn't take the view that it would just go away if we ignored it. SPEAKER B 00:24:10 - 00:24:11 No. SPEAKER A 00:24:11 - 00:24:37 He realized it had to be confronted. And the reality is that things that get let to go become more difficult the longer they seem to hang around. So I think that's very important there. So he was going to deal with it in a very strong sort of way, and that's worth keeping in mind. Now let's go on. Is there— we talked about the tough love. Yes, there's a place for tough love. SPEAKER C 00:24:37 - 00:24:37 Yes, yes, there is. SPEAKER A 00:24:37 - 00:25:06 We talked about that. I want to deal with 2 Corinthians chapter 13 now. And I'm going to read verse 4 here. 2 Corinthians chapter 13 and verse 4. I might even read verse 3 as well because it's very relevant. And this is what it says. Since you seek a proof from Christ speaking in me, who is not weak towards you but mighty in you. That's very interesting. SPEAKER C 00:25:06 - 00:25:07 Yes, it is. SPEAKER A 00:25:07 - 00:25:18 He's, he's, he's saying, you want some proof? Okay. Verse 4, for though He was crucified in weakness. Now, this is very touching when he's talking about Jesus' death now. SPEAKER C 00:25:18 - 00:25:19 Yes. SPEAKER A 00:25:19 - 00:25:37 Yet He lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in Him, but we shall live with Him by the power of God towards you. An interesting comparison between Jesus, who in the weakness of humanity submitted to the cross. SPEAKER B 00:25:37 - 00:25:38 Correct. He did. SPEAKER A 00:25:38 - 00:25:54 And, and he's saying, There's a weakness. You recognize a weakness in me. I'm not the only one, he's saying, but Jesus was the same. But the power of God. And I think this is telling us something about what made Paul so effective in his ministry. Correct. SPEAKER C 00:25:54 - 00:25:54 Hallelujah. SPEAKER A 00:25:54 - 00:25:58 There was a power in that. So, Harold. SPEAKER B 00:25:58 - 00:25:59 Yes. SPEAKER A 00:25:59 - 00:26:04 Do you see some hope for a troubled church today in that kind of structure? SPEAKER B 00:26:04 - 00:26:28 Well, the Corinthian church grew through this too with that Great admonition. But it's also for us today. We all face a battle with sin and temptation. But that verse tells us the answer. And he says, by the power of God toward you in Jesus and in His strength is the answer for us today. SPEAKER A 00:26:28 - 00:26:29 Okay. And I noticed that verse 5 is also very helpful to us today, where Paul writes, examine yourselves as to whether you're in the faith. SPEAKER B 00:26:45 - 00:26:45 Yes. SPEAKER A 00:26:45 - 00:27:04 He says, take a close look at yourself. Don't just say, well, this person, that person. Look at yourselves, test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you, unless indeed you are disqualified? And he says, I trust you will know that you're not disqualified. SPEAKER B 00:27:04 - 00:27:04 Amen. SPEAKER A 00:27:04 - 00:27:05 That was really interesting. SPEAKER B 00:27:05 - 00:27:06 Yes. SPEAKER A 00:27:06 - 00:27:13 He made it very clear for us.
